Labor Day

The Train Station Inn had a float in the parade this year. It's about time!

Here's some pictures Edna got of the float as it passed by. John in a conductor's outfit and
Bobbi and Kelley in the bright yellow and orange Train Station Inn sweaters. Jimmie is the one
driving the engine. :)

Dave and Pam Gunn also got some good shots that they sent us.
Just after gettting
back from the parade
still soaked from the
rain, Jimmie got a
little surprise.
This is where $140.00
community raised
dollars puts you for 2
hours.
Here's the write up from the Truro Daily News:

‘Many hands make light work’
Tatamagouche Labour Day weekend festivities a huge success
SHERRY MARTELL
The Truro Daily News

TATAMAGOUCHE — Organized chaos is the best way to describe what happens at the Tatamagouche Fire Department
during Labour Day weekend.
During the first big event of the holiday weekend, the yard sale and auction, brigade members functioned like a well-oiled
machine and kept a non-stop flow of items on the auction block until nothing remained.
Within minutes of the last items being sold the auction tent was dissembled, put in storage and volunteers began the next task
of preparing for the Labour Day picnic, which included a parade, carnival games, community supper and two variety shows.
“It just happens,” said fire chief Jim Forbes.
“It is the same as on fire scenes. Everybody knows there is a job to be done and it gets done.”
On Monday, hundreds of people lined the village streets to watch the parade that went ahead as planned despite pouring rain.
Forbes said it was incredible to see so many people out and is very pleased with everyone who took time to decorate floats.
“It just keeps getting better and better every year,” he said.
A mock jail, a new event added to the celebration this year, kept several people captive for the afternoon, including the area’s
county councillor, Jimmie LeFresne, who was imprisoned for about 2 hours and 15 minutes, raising about $135 for the
volunteer department.
The small rural brigade has about 35 active firefighters, all pitching in to do their part, but Forbes said there are also many
community volunteers who lend a hand, adding to the success of the annual event.
“The old saying, ‘many hands make light work’ definitely applies here,” the chief said. “We are so very fortunate to have so
many people come out to support us year after year.”
About $20,000 is raised by the department during the annual Labour Day celebration.

Non-Paying Guests

(Can you spot the nest? No not the hornet's nest, that's been empty for 2 years.)
The station had some non-paying guests the past month. We
saw that the mother had set up a nest...and naturally some
eggs appeared. It didn't take long for the eggs to hatch and we
had 4 baby robins. We watched them grow fast. Before too
long there was no room left in the nest. One left on a
Thursday, 2 left Friday and then the last one left the next day,
Saturday.
(We didn't get the camera out in time
to have a picture with all 4 of them.)

Caboose face lift
The old green caboose saw some changes this May.
Dave and Bob had fun (ha-ha) replacing boards and
insulation and giving it a fresh coat of paint. To
their surprise when they tore off some of the old
boards and started digging into the old insulation
they discovered that it was made from horse hair.

Do you think we got enough stock?
(Jimmie opening
some stock we had
piled in the cafe.)
As you can see from the pictures Jimmie has a great time oredering as much stock as possible.

Although it never seems to stop arriving and you can always hear us say "we don't have room
for all of this!" Carole and Jimmie do a wonderful job finding space and creating a beautiful
and unique gift shop that you can shop in for hours and see something new with every blink
of your eye.
Here's a few pictures for you TSI fans that can't make it to the
station this year. Enjoy!
Nude beach anyone?
(love the "king schnozzz")
The telegraph room.
Jimmie's tea section.
Is this where I check in?
That's a taste of the giftshop for this season.

At the end of January we went on our
annual buying trip to the Toronto gift
shows with 4 days of 5 different trade
shows located in downtown Toronto
and the outskirts by the airport. It's a
bit mind boggling with thousands of
booths to look at and decide on what
unique products we want to have this
season in the Train Station gift shop.

We visited familiar booths with tried
and true products and we are very
excited about all the new products we
purchased
from new vendors. One booth in particular was called "Gadgets In
Motion" with a unique line of products for a home office. Visit them
here: Gadgetsinmotion.com.

The Sale

The sale over the weekend went well considering the storm overnight Friday made it so hard
for people to get out Saturday morning.
The money raised from the café proceeds was $265.00 that went to "The Patterson Wharf", their
first fund raiser. A big thanks and congratulations to everyone that helped.

The Week The Women Went

Well today is the day . At 8pm this evening Tatamagouche will become a house hold name.
The CBC TV series “
The Week The Women Went” premieres tonight. The media coverage
has been phenomenal for our community with the build up to the show and right in the
middle of it is the Train Station Inn. A lot of people may have to leave town after it airs as
several of us had mics on most of the days while the film crew was filming, goodness knows
what we said or did. Hopefully it will all be for the best and Tatamagouche will have a
booming tourism  industry in the coming year.
You can catch it on the web at
www.cbc.ca/theweekthewommenwwent

See you on the tube!

Toronto Gift Show

Just got back from our buying trip to Toronto at the national gift shows. Shelley and I
found a lot of unique new gift items to have in our gift shop this coming season. They
range from handcrafted items from Guatemala to a designer mouse for your desktop or
laptop computer.
The first episode from the TV series "The Week The Women Went" was repeated while we
were in Toronto as a result we had great fun and a lot of laughs with people recognizing us
from the show.

Halifax Gift Show

The girls (Carole, Bobbi, Janet & Janette) went to the Halifax gift show this past weekend.
It was their first time down and we had to drag them out when it was time to go. They
could have stayed and shopped for days. They bought a new line of summer clothes to sell
in our gift shop this season so make sure you stop in and pay us a visit. You never know
what you might find.

Railway Cook, Doris Seeton

It was with sadness that I received word of the passing a an old friend this week. I met
Doris on the work trains when I was 6 and we became close friends. In the summers I
would spend the day with her in the cook cars of the work train as she prepared the meals
for the railway crews repairing the rail beds and bridges in Tatamagouche.  Then one
summer (1962) the work train did not come back. I lost track of Doris until one day her
granddaughter came into the train station and asked if I was Jimmie.  I was able to meet
Doris again some 45 years after the last time I saw her. I walked into her nursing home
room and asked if she remembered me and to my astonishment she answered "Your not
Jimmie?" It turned out Doris had keep track of me all those years with a scrap book of
everything that happened at the Train Station.

Doris Lillian Seeton (Phillips), 88, Milford and Truro, passed away Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009,
in Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro, with her loving family by her side.
Born in Shubenacadie, Doris worked for 30 years as a cook for the maintenance workers of
C.N.R. She was known for her great recipes, which until recently she was still sharing. She
was the type of person everyone loved and cared for. She had a wonderful personality and
people were drawn to her.
A graveside committal service will be held at later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may
be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia. Arrangements are under the direction of
Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Condolences to the family
may be made at:

EDITORIAL Truro Daily News
"TV show should pay dividends"
The Truro Daily News

Many small and medium-sized Maritime communities have felt the pinch of a depressed
tourism industry this decade.
The Americans, for the most part it seems, stopped visiting shortly after 9-11, and Upper
Canadians have been arriving in less frequent numbers, too.
Enticing them to return is an on-going process, but reaching that target audience costs
money. Lots of money.
Imagine, then, the potential windfall that fell into the lap of Tatamagouche, the
picturesque North Shore village that hosted the recently completed eight-part television
series entitled ‘The Week the Women Went.’
That’s eight hours of free advertising to a national audience which has, on occasion,
surpassed or approached the one million plateau. Those are Hockey Night in Canada
numbers, folks. And you can bet that more than a few of those viewers have checked out
Tatamagouche on their atlas or GoogleMap whilst pondering a trip down to the East
Coast.
All of these tourists won’t be coming just to look at the ocean or buy homemade crafts,
either. More likely some will want to take a closer look at some of the hard working,
good hearted, laid-back and occasionally quirky characters they got to know just a little
these past eight weeks.
Yes, Tatamagouche bared itself to the nation, warts and all. A few residents are no doubt
still cringing about the way their little piece of
paradise was portrayed.
But don’t forget that any publicity is often much better than no publicity at all.
Particularly when tourism is part of your community’s lifeblood.
The village can be proud of its time in the spotlight. Now let’s keep our fingers crossed
that the streets of Tatamagouche will be a little busier this summer.
And, hopefully, some other communities of Colchester County will reap some of the spin-
off benefits, too.

Summer at the station

We survived "Hurricane Bill". A few broken branches and a lot more chestnuts on
the front platform but that's about it.
The summer went great. Lots of folks around and lots of pictures taken. Jimmie has
to be the most photographed "tourist attraction" in all of Nova Scotia this season. If
you have any pictures of yourself taken with Jimmie "The Conductor" we'd love to
have a copy. Send them along to
