Originally built in 1911 as a wooden boxcar for the Grand Trunk Railway, the builder was The Canadian
Car and Foundry Co. Hamilton. Canadian National Railways purchased the Grand Trunk Railway and
gave it a number between 340200 and 344699. It was converted into a caboose in 1941 and
numbered CN 7825. 7 Canadian National Railways sold it in 1982 to a crane operator in New Glasgow.
Mr. Leil purchased 3 cabooses at the time and planned to turn them into hunting camps. The 3
cabooses set in his back yard and deteriorated until he sold # 78761 in 1990 to Upper Clements
Theme Park, Clementsport N.S. (caboose # 78761 had now deteriorated beyond restoration) The 2
remaining cabooses continued to deteriorate until January 1994 when they were purchased by the
Train Station Inn and moved to Tatamagouche. After receiving approval from the N.S. Department of
Tourism restoration began in 1994. During the restoration the municipal building inspector determined
that the cabooses were buildings and required a building permit. A building permit could not be
obtained because a railway car does not meet the building code standards thus a stop work order was
issued and the project shut down. In March of 1995 a private members Bill was introduced into the
Nova Scotia Legislature…

"Bill #9, The Train Station Inn Cabooses Act": states that a Caboose is a railway car and not a building
as long as it stays on its wheels and the wheels are on tracks. The bill received 3 readings and Royal
assent in May of 1995, leading the way for this caboose to be restored as accommodations that year.
